TRAIN THE EARS! Different accents and intercultural aspects

Date: 25 March, Time: 14H CET

Speaker: Alice Henderson, Associate Professor, University Grenoble Alpes

Do you often work with people from different countries, languages and cultures?

How could you improve your ability to decipher English spoken with an accent, whether native or non-native?

In this webinar-workshop, you'll work through a series of exercises, to start improving your ability to decipher accented English. Exercises are combined with group discussions and a bit of theory, in an enjoyable, interactive format.

Key words: Accented English, ear training, listening skills, intercultural exchange, language variation

WHAT DO MY VALUES HAVE TO DO WITH MY JOB?

Date: 29 April, Time: 14H CET

Coordinator:  Natasha Wilcke, President of Ethics and Deontology Committee, Grenoble INP-UGA

We’ll start by sharing what YOU want from this workshop.

Then we shall examine how the differences in values across cultures may impact your effectiveness, as you have to deal increasingly with people from different backgrounds.

We shall see how having to adapt to different ways of working should not be treated as a problem – but a prospect for growth and an opportunity for dialogue. Much of the workshop will be broken down into smaller Break-out rooms to improve exchanges.

Key words: Values, cultural differences, collaboration, informal exchanges, management

MANAGING ACROSS CULTURES

Date: 20 May, Time: 14H CET

Speaker:  Nicolas Robert, Associate Professor, University Grenoble Alpes

There will come a day when the world is open for business again! Despite COVID 19 and telecommuting, we will have to engage in intercultural relationships at the work place instead of cowering in our own corners!  In this webinar/workshop, after a lucid examination of the pitfalls we have to avoid in order to work with people from other cultures, we will look at the well-known Geert Hofstede's model. Yes, this tool is useful, but yes, it is also a tool that can be questioned!

Key words: Management, ethnocentrism, cultures, stereotypes, representation, surveys.

The registration for this workshop was carried internally through each university's distribution channels.
