An international collaboration led by TU Graz brings together six Unite! universities - TU Graz, PoliTo, TUDa, UPC, Grenoble INP-UGA, and ULisboa - alongside an association, a research institute and six companies, including Infineon Technologies Austria and Končar from Croatia.

The European Chips Act aims to elevate the European microchip industry, requiring a substantial workforce for new semiconductor production facilities. The demand for skilled personnel in the electronics sector is pressing, with estimates ranging from 60,000 to 150,000 across Europe.

GreenChips-EDU seeks to address this workforce shortage. The project, funded by the European Commission and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency, aims to accelerate the training of skilled workers in microelectronics. Not only that but the initiative also aims to redefine the criteria for locating production facilities, focusing on education and talent development.

Objectives

  • Addressing skills needs: GreenChips-EDU will design Bachelor and Master Degree programs, offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), provide MBA & Self-Standing Modules, host Summer Schools, Sustainability Hackathons, Maker Spaces, and Learning Repair Cafés.

  • Attracting qualified teaching staff and students: Initiatives include a staff exchange program, internships, summer schools, or hackathons at various locations, double degree programs, student mobility, and scholarships.

  • Upgrading digital solutions, equipment and infrastructure, with a special focus
on interoperability of IT systems across participating HEIs: To enhance the project's impact, the team will prioritize upgrading digital solutions, equipment, and infrastructure, with a special emphasis on ensuring interoperability of IT systems among participating Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This involves providing access to state-of-the-art IC design infrastructure, facilitating entry to IC fabrication facilities and lab testing of chips, establishing shared CAD infrastructure, and implementing a common testing platform accessible to all partners.

  • Establishing structural and sustainable partnerships between the members of
the consortium: The network will strengthen through harmonized education programs and joint activities among all consortium members.
